Transponder Key Programming
Able Lock Shop: Expert Transponder Key Programming Throughout Nassau County
Dealerships charge $150 to $400 or more to program transponder keys, and many require you to tow your vehicle to their location. Able Lock Shop programs transponder keys for all makes and models at a fraction of dealer prices. We come to you throughout Nassau County and Suffolk County, program your key on-site, and get you back on the road the same day. Whether you lost your only key, need a spare for a family member, or your transponder key stopped working, our mobile automotive locksmiths provide fast, affordable service without the dealership markup.
Transponder keys have been standard on most vehicles since the mid-1990s. These keys contain a tiny computer chip that communicates with your vehicle’s immobilizer system. Without proper programming, your engine won’t start even if the key fits the ignition. Many Nassau County drivers don’t realize that independent locksmiths can program transponder keys just as effectively as dealerships, and for significantly less money.
When you choose Able Lock Shop for automotive locksmith services, you get factory-trained technicians with the latest programming equipment for domestic, Asian, and European vehicles. We program Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Hyundai, and hundreds of other makes and models. Most transponder key programming takes 30 to 60 minutes, and we provide upfront pricing with no hidden fees. You’ll save money, avoid towing charges, and get professional service backed by 75+ years of locksmith experience.

Understanding Transponder Keys
Not all car keys are the same. Understanding the difference between traditional keys, transponder keys, and key fobs helps you know what service you need and what to expect.
Traditional keys are metal keys without electronics. They physically turn the ignition but don’t communicate with the vehicle’s computer. Most vehicles made before 1995 use traditional keys. These can be duplicated at any hardware store.
Transponder keys look like traditional metal keys but contain a computer chip in the plastic head. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the chip sends a unique code to your vehicle’s immobilizer system. If the code matches, the engine starts. If it doesn’t match, the vehicle remains immobilized. Transponder keys must be programmed to your specific vehicle using specialized equipment.
Key fobs combine transponder chips with remote buttons that lock, unlock, and sometimes start your vehicle from a distance. Modern vehicles often use key fobs exclusively, with no metal key blade. We also provide, key fob programming for vehicles with remote entry systems.
Many vehicles from the late 1990s through early 2010s use transponder keys without remote functions. If you drive an older Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, or Ford F-150, you likely have a transponder key.
Vehicle Coverage and Cost Savings
Able Lock Shop programs transponder keys for virtually every vehicle make and model sold in North America, including domestic brands like Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, GMC, Jeep, and Chrysler; Asian manufacturers including Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Subaru, and Mitsubishi; and European vehicles including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, and Volvo.
Dealerships often charge $200 to $400 for transponder key programming plus the cost of the key itself. Some dealers require appointments days or weeks out, and most require you to tow the vehicle to their service department if you don’t have a working key. Able Lock Shop provides mobile service at your home, workplace, or anywhere in Nassau County, and our pricing is typically 40% to 60% less than dealership rates.
For example, a Honda dealership might charge $250 to program a transponder key. Able Lock Shop charges $100 to $150 for the same service, including the mobile visit. That’s real savings without sacrificing quality or reliability.
We also handle emergency situations. If you’re locked out and need a new transponder key immediately, our car lockout service includes key cutting and programming on-site.
