Able Lock Shop: Fast Response, 24/7 Availability, Experienced Team
Finding the right safe isn’t just about picking something off a shelf. The wrong size, rating, or placement can leave your most important belongings just as vulnerable as before. At Able Lock Shop in New Hyde Park, we’ve been helping Nassau County homeowners choose, deliver, and professionally install safes since 1945, and we know exactly what works for homes around here.

What You're Actually Protecting
Most people come to us after something happens. A fire two streets over. A break-in in the neighborhood. A flooded basement that destroyed old paperwork they can’t replace. Whatever brought you here, the first question isn’t “which safe?” it’s “what are you protecting?”
For most Nassau County homeowners, that list includes irreplaceable documents: birth certificates, Social Security cards, passports, property deeds, and insurance policies. Add in jewelry passed down through the family, a small amount of emergency cash, maybe a firearm. These aren’t things you can re-order from Amazon if they’re gone. That’s why the safe you choose matters as much as having one.
We carry fireproof, burglar-rated, gun, floor, wall, and depository safes. Whether you need a compact unit for documents or a heavy-duty floor safe that’s anchored directly into your foundation, we’ll point you to the right fit for your home and budget.

Understanding Fire Ratings Before You Buy
Walk into a big-box store and you’ll see the word “fireproof” on a lot of boxes. What that label doesn’t always tell you is how long the protection actually lasts and that’s the number that matters.
UL fire ratings indicate how long the interior of a safe remains below a specified temperature during a fire. The three most common ratings you’ll see are 30-minute, 1-hour, and 2-hour. Paper documents char at 451°F, so you need the interior to stay below that threshold for the duration of the fire and the cooling period that follows. Digital media thumb drives, external hard drives, and DVDs are even more sensitive, starting to fail above 125°F.
A 30-minute UL fire rating is the minimum most locksmiths recommend for residential use, but if you live in an older home or store digital media alongside documents, a 1- or 2-hour-rated safe is worth the investment. Homes built before 1990, which cover a large portion of the housing stock in Garden City, Mineola, and throughout New Hyde Park, often have older construction materials that burn differently than newer builds. We factor that in when we make recommendations.

Safe Types for Every Home Layout
Not every home has the same space or the same setup. That’s why we stock several different styles.
Freestanding upright safes are the most common. They sit on the floor, can be bolted down, and offer the most interior space for their footprint. Floor safes are embedded directly into your concrete slab, completely hidden under a rug or tile, and extremely difficult to remove. Wall safes mount in the wall cavity between studs and are concealed behind a painting or mirror. They offer less depth but are completely out of sight.
Gun safes are purpose-built for firearm storage, with quick-access options for bedside use and large-capacity models for collectors. If you own firearms and have teenagers in the house, proper gun safe storage isn’t optional it’s something we take seriously and are equipped to handle correctly.
Depository safes have a drop slot for cash, checks, or receipts and are more common for businesses, but homeowners who run a small operation from the house occasionally ask about them, too.
We don’t push you toward the most expensive option. We ask what you need to protect, where you want to put it, and what your home can actually accommodate, then we show you what fits.

Professional Installation Matters
A safe sitting on the floor of your bedroom that isn’t anchored is just dead weight a burglar can carry out. That’s not an exaggeration. Unanchored safes under a few hundred pounds get moved more often than you’d think.
Our professional safe installation team anchors every safe to the floor or wall using the appropriate hardware for your home’s construction. Concrete anchoring, wood subfloor anchoring, and wall mounting all require different techniques, and doing it wrong either compromises the security or damages your home.
We also know how to position a safe so it works with your space rather than against it. A gun safe near a bedroom needs to be accessible quickly in the dark. A document safe is better in a closet. A floor safe gets installed where traffic won’t accidentally reveal it. These are details that matter, and they’re part of what we bring when we handle the full job from selection through installation.
If your safe needs service down the road, our safe repair services cover mechanical issues, combination resets, and damaged locking mechanisms.

FAQ
Most frequent questions and answers
Fire ratings measure how long the interior of a safe stays cool enough to protect paper or digital media during a fire. Burglar ratings measure how long the safe resists forced entry with tools. Many quality residential safes carry both ratings, which is what we recommend for homeowners storing documents alongside valuables or firearms.
Residential safes range from a few hundred dollars for a basic fireproof document safe up to $2,000 or more for a high-capacity gun safe or a TL-rated burglar safe. Most Nassau County homeowners find a solid combination fire/burglar safe in the $400–$900 range that covers their needs well. We’ll show you options at different price points when you come in or call.
For any safe that weighs less than 750 pounds, yes anchoring is strongly recommended. An unanchored safe is a security liability. Our installation team bolts safes to concrete slabs, wood subfloors, and walls depending on your home’s construction and where the safe is being placed.
Yes. Floor safe installation in an existing home requires cutting into the concrete slab and setting the safe at floor level. It’s one of the most secure options available and we handle the full installation, including the concrete work.
